Rachel Profiling

Hello, I'm Rachel.

Writer/editor. New Mexican tumbleweed blown east to skyscraper country.

Right now, I am working on a book about F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sheilah Graham, and Hollywood in the 1930s. It will also contain a lot of drinking, powder blue suits, dances at the Cocoanut Grove, betrayal, gossip columns, crazy ladies, secret Jews, film lot moguls, and Dorothy Parker quips at funerals. If the world is still around then, it should be out from Random House around 2014. So let's hope the Mayans were wrong.

If you want to say hi please do. Or find me in short form, here.

I visited Erica’s studio in Brooklyn this weekend and we had an amazing chat about the nature of photography in 2008, especially about the need for a sense of memory in contemporary pictures. Erica is one of those photographers who has drawn from years of other’s work; she has cluttered stacks of Diane Arbus,  Juergen Teller, Kertesz, Cartier-Bresson, books and books and books. There is a real old soul quality to what she does, and it comes from not following trends but trying to dialogue with the work of her forbears. She showed me a new set of gelatin prints she is working on; gorgeous. You’ll be seeing a lot more of her this year.
